The Thermal Properties of Glass Fiber Thread

The thermal properties of glass thread are what make it such a special material. Glass fibers are the oldest and most widely-used composite reinforcement in the world, and for good reason. In addition to being both impact-resistant and lightweight, glass fibers offer unparalleled thermal capabilities.

Glass Fiber as Thermal Insulators

Glass fiber threads are frequently used as thermal insulators because of their high ratio of surface area to weight. Glass wool is machined through a process that uses a special bonding agent to trap air cells within. Thousands of tiny cells result in low-density textile products that in turn provide incredibly high levels of thermal insulation. The thermal conductivity of some glass fiber textiles can reach 0.05 W/(m K).

Another thing that makes glass fiber so attractive for thermal applications is its relatively low cost. Compared to alternatives like carbon fiber, glass fiber is both budget-friendly and high-performing.


Heat Resistance of Glass Fibers

In addition to its inherent thermal properties, glass fiber threads also offer supreme heat resistance. Retaining around half their room temperature strength at 700°F and melting at around 2075° F, glass threads are an excellent choice for a variety of high-temperature applications. And since glass is naturally flame-resistant, glass fabrics are organically noncombustible. It’s important to note that in addition to being flame resistant, most glass fibers are also incredibly chemical resistant, too, including against alkalis and acids.

For electrical applications, few materials offer the combination of benefits of glass fiber thread. Most glass thread utilized within the electrical industry is E-glass, which offers supreme strength at low cost. The electrical properties of glass thread include the ability to retain high dielectric strength and low dielectric constant; this paired with thermal resistance (and low moisture absorption) make the material perfectly suitable for nearly any kind of electrical application.
